Introduction

Henry Fayol's theory is being practiced by management to manage and control the internal actions of a company. In his theory, there has been a focus on fulfilling management efficiency. Moreover, his theory closely resembles modern managerial thinking and practices (Ramakrishna 2019). The purpose of this report is to compare and contrast four of Henry Fayol's principles of management. It will further examine the relevance of these principles in modern managerial practices. This will also encompass instances from the private as well as public sectors. The chosen Henry Fayol's principles of management are Division of Work; Discipline; Initiative; and Equity.

Define and Explain Four Principles

Division of work

It implies assigning every worker an activity in which they can become skilled. It can be said that segregation of work amongst the employees might improve the excellence of the product. This also can refine the efficiency, preciseness, pace, and productivity of the workforce. It is said that specialization is vital since the workforce performs definite activities not only at a single time but as a daily activity (Abdulkadir et al. 2020).

Discipline

This is deemed a vital value for any management. It can be said that effective performance and practice interrelation can make the managerial job simple and all-inclusive. Further, workers' good behavior assists them in steadily forming and advancing in their professional careers. To maintain discipline in the workplace, management must suppose clear elucidation of the rules; effective direction; a reward system for superior discipline; and likely provision for penalty for non-obedience (Ali et al. 2021).

Initiative

As per this principle, workforces must inspire and must be provided a chance to take initiative to make and implement the plan. It is recommended that the workers at entire levels must be stimulated to take initiative at work. This inspires workers to work superiorly and to take more interest in the company.

Equity

It states that all workers must be treated affably and equally. Management must provide job safety to their workers. There must be no discrimination among workers based on nationality, caste, and more. The equity certifies coordinated relationships between seniors and juniors. This contributes to the effective and smooth functioning of the company. Besides, it refines the gratification and inspiration of the workers, developing the relationship between management and workers (Adeagbo et al. 2019).

Compare and Contrast

Concerning school principles, the chosen four principles are compared and contrasted.

  1. Division of work: In this, the principal of secondary school emphasizes segmenting the school work amongst academic and non-academic workforce who are skilled and specialized in a specific area to do such activity. It can be said that such a division of work might make work easy and might lead to higher productivity. This will assist the students in attaining pace with preciseness in their performance.
  2. Discipline: The school management uses this principle since discipline is deemed an essential requirement for the perseverance of the teaching-learning environment at school.
  3. Equity: It is no doubt that effective sense and experience are required to certify fairness to each one at school and it might certify devotion and trustworthiness.
  4. Initiative: The school principal can develop a setting that inspires the workers to take initiative. It might assist in offering a sense of high gratification to dedicated and intelligent educators (Timothy et al. 2019).

The principle of equity is followed by Starbucks Company wherein its entire staff is treated similarly. The company believes in not discriminating based on caste, gender, and more. This brings forth harmony in their work that further certifies superior outcomes. The principle of equity is related to the principle of the initiative since the Starbucks Company further cultivates a culture of inclusion by better-engaging workers in social impact practices by following the principle of equity (Hall et al. 2021). Also, this company follows the principle of discipline by adhering to laws, policies, and rules. The employees in this company usually avoid behavior which is probable to develop an emergence of misconduct. The principle of discipline is not aligned and correlated with the principle of initiative since bad conduct by workers in a business might stop the managers from enabling workers to take initiative at the company (Gupta 2023). The division of work principle is followed by Starbucks Company by segmenting the work according to specialized workers’ abilities. This principle is aligned with the principle of initiative since workers in this company are given the freedom to conduct plans for the assigned tasks (Bright 2019).

With regards to a public sector company namely Bank of England, it can be said that the bank follows the principle of equity and initiative by embracing inclusion and equity within its business. It has a well-established inclusive culture that enables workers to take part in initiatives for the bank. It usually avoids non-inclusive culture which would mean it follows the principle of discipline as well. Both these principles are aligned with one another. Besides, this company has zero tolerance for discriminatory practices. It is said that the equity in the Bank of England might contribute to more diverse leadership and hence refine the excellence of decisions. The behavior and developed collaborations make the bank's management work effectively and consistently. However, the principle of division of work is not aligned with the equity, discipline, and initiative principle. It is so since the enhanced divisibility of work poses numerous vital issues for the bank (social and economic) regarding the relationship between worker and bank (Bank of England 2017).

Conclusion

From the above, it can be concluded that the chosen principles of management by Henry Fayol are division of work; discipline; equity; and initiative. These principles are considered as means to plan, organize, decision-making, and so on within any business. Moreover, it is inferred that in the contemporary principles of management, the focus and priority are given to workforces rather than managers. Currently, workers are encouraged to conceive and execute new ideas and take initiatives by both private and public sector companies examples mentioned in the above discussion such as Starbucks; Bank of England; and so on.
