Nursing has been considered one of the noblest professions. These professionals have been identified as the front-line managers in any given case scenario, assisting in handling patient care with finesse. Nurses have a strict obligation to abide by certain rules and regulations while handling patient care. This rule can be considered under the broader umbrella of the ethical practice of the nursing profession. The main role and duty of the healthcare nurse are to ensure the safety and security of their patients while enabling them with the required care provision.
Media has a significant role in shaping the perception of the public towards nursing care and their profession in a holistic manner. This has been highlighted especially during the recent testing times of COVID-19. We have all seen what contributions nurse have made to ensure our safety and enable healthcare promotion for the human race. Nurses have been on their toes, managing care for the patients, without having a concern for their respective health. It can be safe to say that our media has highlighted them as superheroes, which is not wrong to state as well. Various tabloids, newspapers and magazines have helped change the perception of the nursing profession over the past few decades. This has been carried out with the help of focusing on isolated incidences shedding light on some of the poor incidences. Some media personals have also utilized the information to portray the profession in a negative aspect. This is generally done to commercialize the value of their respective editorial. These organizations have been focusing on malafying the reputation of the nursing profession and their practices. Thus, impeaching the reputation of hear-working and sincere individuals. However, we cannot deny the fact that the world couldn't have been in better hands, than the hand of nurses in times of pandemics such as COVID-19.
There have been many speculations and theories, that have enabled a different definition for the nursing profession as per their inference. The Royal College of Nursing in the United Kingdom has been able to formulate a specified definition for the nursing profession, encompassing all six principles of the nursing profession. The definition goes by the saying "The use of clinical judgment in the provision of care to enable people to improve, maintain or to recover health. This is to be done to cope up with health problems and to attain the highest possible standards of quality of life. This is to be carried on for whatever disease or disability until death comes". The definition is well in sync with contemporary nursing practice. It clearly states the purpose of nursing practice and their domain of medical practice. The definition compels the nurses to stay put and focused on the basic criteria of enabling a value-based approach for their patients. This has to be done by promoting dignity, respect and autonomy of the patients. It also ensures that contemporary nursing practise should be carried out with close collaboration between the patient and their family members to maximize the healthcare benefits.
The 6C's of nursing care and practice has been defined by one and only National Health Service England (NHS), in the year of 2012. The components are entitled under the leaflet named "Our Culture of Compassionate Care". The details outline the 6C's of nursing care. These details reflect on the work which helps in defining the healthcare professionals and their way of treating the patients. These components include:
Ethics is not only one of the main concerns attached adjacent to the nursing profession, it is rather a topic of debate as well. Apart from the nursing profession, ethics make up for every daily walk of our lives. Ethical standards have a deep impact on nursing practice. Apart from imparting education, these ethical practices also help in regulating the working of the nursing profession and safeguarding the best interest of the patient through quality care promotion. Their main role is to promote the well-being of the public and maintain public health standards while doing so. These standards also help in regulating the other standards of nursing practice such as training, education, conducting performance evaluation regularly and many others. Some of the patients might be vulnerable to the exposure of unethical and unlawful clinical practice. With sound ethical measures and codes in place, these vulnerable patients can be protected and enabled with safe care provision as well. Some of these patients might fall in the category of disabled, advancing age, having a chronic illness and so on. Apart from safeguarding these patients from significant harm, these ethical principles also help in preventing the prevailing discrimination in healthcare settings. These ethical considerations help in imparting the nurses with the required education to identify and acknowledge the significant harm and exploitation and report it to the concerning authorities as well.
In nutshell, I have learnt that the definitions and the core principles discussed and enrolled by the nursing council are defined as per set standards. The views of nursing and the scope of nursing practice till date remains unexplored. The public perception might vary with the existing nursing care framework. Students of nursing are faced with the dual task of learning the techniques of nursing along with imbibing the practical training aspects of the program. The complex curriculum can be overwhelming even for the best of students. Nursing Dissertation Help provides students with a convenient solution to their struggles.
